Men Place Third at Waterville Valley, N.H.,

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's ski team placed third out of 10 squads in the Giant Slalom with 328.06 points and fifth out of 10 teams in the Slalom with 547.71 points, while the women's ski team placed fourth out of 10 teams in the Slalom with 326.34 and placed second out of 10 teams in the Giant Slalom with 201.44 points all of which were held this weekend at the Plymouth State Carnival in Waterville Valley, N.H.
Individually, freshman Rush Hawkins (Shelbourne, Mass.) won both the Slalom and the Giant Slalom marking the first time this season he has accomplished the feat. In Saturday's Slalom, which was held under -26? temperatures, Hawkins blew away the 70-person field with a two-run time of 1:33.81, more than two-and-a-half second better than the second-place finisher. Senior captain David Pomeroy (Winthrop, Mass.) also turned in an impressive Slalom effort placing 14th overall with a time of 1:41.01.
In the men's Giant Slalom, Hawkins placed first out of 73 competitors with a two-run time of 1:02.97. Pomeroy also turned in an impressive finish with a top-10 showing of 1:04.77, placing him ninth overall. Sophomore Pat Bachant (Hubbardston, Mass.) placed 14th with a time of 1:05.54.
At the conclusion of the weekend, the men's ski team currently stands in fifth place of the Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference with 17 points. The women's ski team is currently tied for first-place with Colby-Sawyer as each team has eight points. Complete Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference Standings are below. The UMass ski teams return to action this weekend, January 31 and Feb. 1, as they to Lincoln, N.H. and Loon Mountain for the Brown Carnival.
