Women's Track Finishes Fifth At Brown Invite

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Massachusetts women's track and field team finished fifth at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I. on Saturday. Brown, the host school, won the meet with 127 points while Rhode Island was second with 102 points and Syracuse was third with 98.50 points. UMass finished with 57 total points.
The Minutewomen were led by junior Chante Soares' (New Bedford, Mass.) first-place finish in the long jump. The junior hit the 18' 8" mark to earn 10 points for UMass. Freshman Ashley Creel (Sandwich, Mass.), sophomore Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.) and junior Brandy Green (Fitchburg, Mass.) also performed well for the Minutewomen, finishing second in their respective events. Huff was second in the 100-meter dash at 12.74, while Creel placed second in the high jump when she cleared the 5'6" mark and Green claimed the silver in the pole vault when she was able to clear 11'6-1/4".
Also tallying points for Massachusetts was senior Jen Freemas (Wallingford, Pa.), sophomore Jen Iasiello (Barrington, R.I.) and freshman Billieann Kelly (Mansfield, Mass.). Freemas finished fourth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles at 1:03.82 while Kelly was fourth in the javelin throw at 131'00". Iasiello finished fifth in the hammer throw at 152'00".
This week the UMass pentathlon performers will compete at Holy Cross on April 16-17 and the rest of the team will travel to UConn for a meet on April 18.
