DURHAM, N.H. - The University of Massachusetts women's outdoor track and field team finished eighth (47 points) at the New England Outdoor Championships at Durham, N.H., on Saturday. Maine won the two-day event with 78.50 points while New Hampshire finished second with 77 points and Boston College was third with 70 points.
Junior Brandy Green (Fitchburg, Mass.) led the way for the Minutewomen when she cleared 12'3-1/2" to win the pole vault. The mark set a new meet record as well as a new UMass school record. Green surpassed the 12'2" mark Kerry Teamey cleared at the 1999 New England Championships and also passed the 12'0" mark she cleared last season to set the previous school record.
On Saturday Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.) recorded two solid finishes for the Minutewomen. She placed third in the 100-meter dash at 12.06 and fourth in the 200-meter dash at 25.12.
Also performing well for UMass was freshman Ashley Creel (Sandwich, Mass.) and senior Jennifer Freemas (Wallingford, Pa.). Creel placed fourth in the high jump at 5'1" and Freemas finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:03.32.
Massachusetts had two athletes finish in the top five in the heptathlon on Saturday when senior Crystal Therrien (Fairhaven, Mass.) placed third with 4,128 points and junior Nastaran Shams was fifth with 3,962 points.
Next weekend the Minutewomen will travel to Princeton, N.J., for the ECAC Championships.
