Track Teams Finish First, Second At UNH

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of Massachusetts women's track and field team finished first while the men's team claimed second place in Saturday's meet at New Hampshire. The Minutewomen won the seven-team meet with 155.50 points while the men's team finished behind the host school, UNH (157 points), with 132 points to finish second out of six teams.
The Minutewomen captured five first place finishes at UNH to win the seven-team meet. Sophomore Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.) led the way for Massachusetts, capturing first place in the 100-meter dash at 12.60 and finishing second in the 200-meter dash at 26.47.
UMass also competed well in the longer running events, capturing three victories. Junior Kristen Ford (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) claimed gold in the 800-meter run at 2:17.14, while junior Kate Markopoulos (Porter Corner, N.Y.) won the 5,000-meter run at 18:36.50 and sophomore Alexis Anzelone (Westfield, N.J.) captured first place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 11:49.40.
Also winning for the Minutewomen on Saturday was junior Chante Soares (New Bedford, Mass.), who placed first in the long jump at 17- 4 1/2.
On the men's side, the Minutemen earned six first-place finishes to earn second place. Senior Ken Scheider (Woodridge, N.J.) led the way for UMass, setting a new school record in the pole vault when he cleared 15-9 1/4 to earn first place.
Massachusetts took first place in three running events when freshman Brandon Phillips (Stoughton, Mass.) placed first in the 110-meter hurdles at 16.36 and junior John O'Neil (North Reading, Mass.) won the 400-meter hurdles at 55.20. Freshman Chris Brayley (Chicopee, Mass.) earned first place in the 100-meter dash at 11.26 and also finished second in the 200-meter dash at 23.17.
Senior Eric Uliano (Haverhill, Mass.) claimed gold in the shot put at 51-9 1/4 while fellow thrower sophomore Mike Antonio (Westboro, Mass.) captured first in the javelin at 193-4.
The men's and women's track and field teams will be in action May 3-4 when they compete in the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Richmond, Va.
