Minutewomen Race At Knecht Cup

Amherst, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts varsity eight turned in a season-best time in the prelims and went on to finish second to West Virginia in the grand final at the Knecht Cup Sunday afternoon on the Copper River in Camden, N.J.
The Minutewomen recorded a time of 6:54.7 in Sunday's final to finish second to West Virginia, which won the race in 6:51.5. UMass' A-10 rival, Fordham, finished third in 6:55.2. Massachusetts' second varsity eight boat finished third in its grand final race, behind Wisconsin and Boston College, in 7:23.2. UMass' second novice eight (8:10.3) also earned the bronze medal behind first-place West Virginia and Saint Joseph's.
A pair of lightweight boats competed in their respective petite finals. UMass' lightweight four placed third in 8:34.7, while its lightweight eight was fourth in its race. (7:50.2).
The Minutewomen's varsity quad "b' boat won the grand final in 7:53.6, and their "a" boat was fourth in 8:19.0. The varsity four finished third in the petite race (8:25.37) and the varsity pair team of junior Lauren Cromwell (Missoula, Mont.) and senior Carrie Hellstedt (Westford, Mass.) was fifth in the grand final at 8:51.4. The duo of senior Mila Gorzkowski (Matawan, N.J.) and junior Laura Hutchinson (North Falmouth, Mass.) finished fourth in the varsity pairs petite race in 9:03.1.
Massachusetts returns to action on Saturday, April 19, with a meet against host-Columbia, Navy and Northeastern in New York City.
