AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Sports Luncheon Committee named four Dinn Brothers UMass Athletes of the Week on Wednesday for the weeks ending Feb. 16 and Feb. 23. The four student-athletes honored were softball player Kelli Arnold (Kalama, Wash.), hockey's Thomas Pock (Klagenfurt, Austria), men's basketball player Jackie Rogers (Syracuse, N.Y.) and swimmer Ryan Zaucha (Auburn, Calif).
Junior Pock and senior Rogers were honored for their efforts for the week ending Feb. 16. P?ck earned Co-Athlete of the Week for his efforts in an 8-6 win over Connecticut on Feb. 14. The junior scored a defenseman school-record five points, including a school record three assists for a blue-liner. His first goal in the third period tied the game with about six minutes, then his second goal with about four minutes to play proved to be the game-winner. P?ck has 32 points (16 g, 16 a), which ranks him fifth in the country among defenseman in scoring.
Rogers was honored for his efforts against St. Bonaventure on Feb. 15. He tallied 26 points against the Bonnies, scoring 22 of them in the second half. Rogers also added 10 rebounds, giving him a double-double on the night. His efforts in the second half helped UMass overcome St. Bonaventure's 40-32 halftime lead, giving them their second straight victory. Earlier in the week Rogers tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds against Richmond to help UMass record a 54-53 win.
Arnold and Zaucha were named Co-Dinn Brothers UMass Athletes of the Week for the period ending Feb. 23. Arnold led the Minutewomen to a 3-0 record last weekend as they won the rain abbreviated NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. She recorded a complete game victory and also picked up a save en route to being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. She was also named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division Player of the Week.
Last Saturday, against then-No. 20 Pacific, Arnold worked two-thirds of an inning, striking out both batters she faced, to preserve a 6-3 UMass win and post her first career save. The next day, against then-No. 11 Florida State, Arnold held the high-powered Seminole offense to just one run on four hits, only one of which left the infield. She also struck out four batters as she improved to 2-1 on the season to go along with a 2.03 ERA.
Zaucha received the UMass honor after winning the 100- and 200-yard backstroke (51.79, 1:50.20) at the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. Feb. 20-22. Zaucha's two first-place finishes helped UMass edge past St. Bonaventure to win its third consecutive A-10 title. Zaucha's efforts earned him both Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet and Most Outstanding Performer of the Year honors from the Atlantic 10, and also earned him a spot on the All-Conference team.
