In the first carnival of the 2003 season, the UMass ski team won three out of the four races that it competed in. The women finished first in both the giant slalom and slalom events while adding two other top 15 finishers in each event as well. The men's team won the giant slalom and also added two other top 15 finishers, and showed strongly as a team in the slalom event, with most of the athletes finishing in the top half of the 81 man field.

On the women's side, senior Carolyn Lewenberg (Newton, Mass.) had the best day of all, winning the slalom witha time of 1:40:74, and finishing fourth in the giant slalom at 1:38:94. Ahead of her in the slalom were two of her teammates, sophomore Nikki Smith (Okemos, Mich.), who won the event with a time of 1:35:52, and freshman Caitlin Doughty (Quincy, Mass.), who finished second at 1:36:47. Senior captain Molly Lyon (Pittsfield, Mass.) turned in a solid performance as well, finishing sixth in the slalom and 17th in the giant slalom.

For the men it was junior captain Beau Gibson (Oakland, Md.) winning the giant slalom witha time of 1:32:96. Brothers David and Christopher Pomeroy (Wintrhop, Mass.) added to the team's succes in the giant slalom, finishing fourth and 14th, respectively.

The women's team is now first in the ECSC (Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference) standings in both the giant slalom and slalom events. The men stand at second in the giant slalom behind only Colby Sawyer, and fourth in the slalom.

The home meet, the only one for UMass this season, took place at Berkshire East, in Charlemont, Mass. The next event for the team is the Plymouth State Carnival in Waterville Valley, N.H. taking place this weekend, January 25-26.
