Ski Teams Take First In Giant Slalom

WATERVILLE, N.H. -- The Massachusetts men's and women's ski teams were both victorious in the giant slalom this weekend, taking first place in the event at the Plymouth State Carnival at Waterville, N.H., Jan. 25-26. The Minutewomen also placed first in the slalom, while the men's team finished fourth in the slalom events.
Leading the way for the women's team were senior Carolyn Lewenberg (Newton, Mass.), senior Molly Lyon (Pittsfield, Mass.) and sophomore Nikki Smith (Okemos, Mich.), Smith recorded a first place victory in the giant slalom at 2:11.85, beating the rest of the field by three seconds. Smith also finished 19th in the slalom at 1:45.02. Lewenberg captured third place in the giant slalom and fifth place in the slalom, while Lyon finished 12th in the giant slalom.
Junior Beau Gibson (Oakland, Md.) turned in two solid performances for the Minutemen, placing second in both the giant slalom and slalom with times of 2:06.00 and 1:29.66, respectively. Also performing well for the men's team was graduate student Nick Kulkarni (Troy, Mich.), senior Chris Pomeroy (Winthrop, Mass.), junior Dave Pomeroy (Winthrop, Mass.) and senior Gidon Silverstein (Pittsfield, Mass.). Dave Pomeroy placed fourth in the giant slalom at 2:06.85 and sixth in the slalom at 1:32.07. Kulkarni finished 12th in the giant slalom, with Chris Pomeroy and Silverstein finishing close behind in 14th and 15th place, respectively.
The men's and women's ski teams will next compete Feb. 1-2 at the Brown Carnival at Loon Mountain in Lincoln, N.H.
