UMass Track Picks Up Two Wins

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Massachusetts women's indoor track and field team defeated Boston University and Sacred Heart, falling only to Boston College, at the New England Challenge Cup on Saturday.
Sophomore Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.) paced the Minutewomen with two first place finishes, winning both the 55-meter dash (7.41) and the 200-meter dash (25.69). Massachusetts also found victories from three other underclassmen this weekend. Freshman Ashley Creel (Sandwich, Mass.) captured first place in the high jump when she hit the 5' 4-1/4" mark and sophomore Corinne Mathews (Niantic, Conn.) claimed first place in the long jump at 17' 1-1/2". In the throwing events, sophomore Jennifer Iasiello (Barrington, R.I.) placed first when she hit the 45' 6-1/2" mark.
Also performing well for UMass were juniors Shannon Jackson (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Chante Soares (New Bedford, Mass.) and sophomore Kay Callahan (Bangkok, Thailand). Jackson finished second in the 55-meter hurdles at 8.67 seconds, while Soares placed third in the long jump at 16' 11-1/2" and Callahan took third place in the triple jump at 35' 1/4".
The Minutewomen will next travel to New Hampshire to compete against UNH and Holy Cross on Jan. 25.
