AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.) has been named the Dinn Brothers/UMass Athlete of the Week as announced today by the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee.
Price went 4-0 at the Eastern Collegiate Women's Tennis Championship en route to the No. 2 singles title. Price took the crown with an upset victory over top-seeded Anna Marie Underwood of West Virginia, 6-0; 6-3. Price also knocked off Patricia Gomez of Stony Brook (1-6, 6-2, 6-2), Maria Anorga of Lehigh (6-0, 1-0 retired) and Cheri Lapane of Providence (6-1, 6-2) along the way.
Yesterday, against Amherst College, Price defeated Rachel Holt in straight sets at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-3). She now boasts a 5-0 overall record this season.
"Every once in a while a coach gets to watch a perfect set," said UMass Head Coach Judy Dixon. "Stephanie's first set in last Sunday's championship was one of those rare occasions where an athlete is able to exactly what they want in terms of play and ability to hit the ball."
Earlier this week, Price was named the Atlantic 10 Conference's Performer of the Week.
The Minutewomen (1-0) return to action Sept. 21-22, when they compete in the Yale Tournament.
