ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy's Matt Sanchez scored his second goal of the game at the 97:07 mark to lead the host Midshipmen to a 3-2 win in the championship game of the Navy Fall Soccer Classic.
The loss overshadowed a historic weekend for UMass Head Coach Sam Koch, who on Friday night became the Minutemen's all-time winningest coach with his 124th win, a 3-2 triumph over Towson University. The loss evens UMass' record to 1-1 on the young season.
UMass jumped out of the gates early, taking a 1-0 lead on Jason Golesky's (Trumbull, Conn.) unassisted goal at 4:36. Golesky's goal, his first of the year and third of his career, was a 30-yard rocket from the left side of the goal that snuck in the top corner.
The Minutemen then took a 2-0 lead 10 minutes later on a team goal. Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) played a header towards the goal and the ball was kicked into the net by a Navy defender at the 14:11 mark.
However, Navy started their rally with Sanchez's first goal of the game at the 37:58 mark to trim the lead to 2-1. The Midshipmen then tied the match at 2-2 on Dan Montgomery's goal at the 65:36 mark. The goal, assisted by Dan Meverosky, came off a rebound that hit off the crossbar, where Montgomery drove it into the back of the net.
The score stayed the same until the overtime session, when Sanchez scored on a breakaway to give Navy the 3-2 victory. Navy outshot UMass, 15-12, but it was the play of Navy goalkeeper Matt Copare that saved the game for the Midshipmen. Copare recorded six saves in the decisive second half, as the Minutemen put constant pressure on the Navy defense.
The Minutemen's next action will be on Friday, Sept. 6, with a 7:00 p.m. match at Boston University.
