Men's Soccer Season Opens with Exhibition Contest Against Rutgers

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team will take on 11th-ranked Rutgers in an exhibition contest at Szot Park in Chicopee, Mass. The Minutemen and Scarlet Knights will face off at 7:00 p.m. on August 25, 2002.

UMass is looking to build upon last season's unprecedented success. The Minutemen finished the year with a school-record-tying 15 wins en route to their first-ever Atlantic 10 Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth. UMass advanced to the second round of the national championship tournament, defeating 2000 runner-up Creighton in the first round. The Minutemen open this year receiving votes in the College Soccer News preseason poll.

Rutgers finished last season ranked ninth nationally, and are ranked 11th in the College Soccer News preseason poll, with a 15-7-3 record. The Scarlet Knights advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
