AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team heads to College Park, Md., this weekend to defend its title at the Verizon Atlantic 10 Championship. The Minutewomen enter the tournament having won five of its last six matches and sport a 6-14 overall record this spring.
The Minutewomen are led by freshman Stephanie Price (Columbia, Mo.), who has recorded an 11-8 singles record this spring, including seven victories in a row. Last week's A-10 Rookie of the Week has also teamed up with sophomore Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) at second doubles and posted a 12-7 record, including a span where they won ten of eleven matches.
Senior Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) has also been hot of late, winning four of her last five singles matches and earning A-10 Performer of the Week accolades last week. She is 4-3 at No. 1 doubles with sophomore Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio), including an impressive 4-0 last week.
Last season, the Maroon & White captured its first conference crown, downing George Washington, 4-2, in the finals and earning the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Play begins Friday, April 19 at 8:00 a.m., and culminates with the championship game on Sunday, April 21, at 11:00 a.m.
