Women's Track finishes eighth at New England Championships

MEDFORD, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's track and field team finished eighth out of 32 teams with 33 points at the 2002 New England Championships held at the Gantcher Center on the campus of Tufts University. Leading the way for the Minutewomen was sophomore Brandy Green (Fitchburg, Mass.) who finished second overall in the 55M hurdles with a time of 8.33 seconds. Before getting to the finals, Green qualified in three preliminary runs. Green also finished third overall in the pole vault clearing 3.57 meters.
Sophomore Shannon Jackson (Bridgewater, Mass.) turned in a time of 8.57 seconds in the the finals of the 55M hurdles and finished eighth.
Senior co-captain Rhianna DaCruz (Pawtucket, R.I.), finished fifth overall in the pole vault clearing 3.47 meters. Other results from yesterday's competition include junior Crystal Therrien (Fairhaven, Mass.) who garnered 14 points for UMass in the pentathlon.
Also scoring yesterday was freshman Christina Bizon (Warwick, R.I.) who finished seventh overall in the weight toss at 15.60 meters. Bizon is coming off a week in which she was a first-team All-Atlantic 10 selection for her performance at the 2002 Verizon Indoor Track and Field Championships where she won the weight throw. In the long jump, freshman Corrine Matthews (Niantic, Conn.) and sophomore Chante Soares (New Bedford, Mass.) finished fifth and eighth, respectively.
The Maroon and White also got points in the 4x200 relay as freshman Shannon Williams (Swarthmore, Pa.), sophomore Kyanna Stallings (Newburyport, Mass.), sophomore Shannon Jackson (Bridgewater, Mass.) and freshman Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.) completed it in 1:45.89, placing them seventh overall.
The Minutewomen compete next Saturday, March 2-3, the ECAC Championships held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, Mass.
