UMass Competes Well After First Day of Competition

AMHERST, Mass. -- The UMass men's and women's swim teams made their presence known during the first day of competition at the Nutmeg Invitational on Friday. After the first day of the three-day meet at Yale University, UMass was led by one first place finish and five second place finishes. The meet, which has no team scoring, will conclude on Sunday.
For the men's team, senior Rob Bellamy (Columbia, Md.) won the 500-yard freestyle at 4:37.22, to finish ahead of teammates Dylan Smith (Timmonium, Md.) and Tommy Keane (Melrose, Mass.), who placed third and fourth, respectively.
Seniors Justin Houck (Wyomissing, Pa.) and Ryan Zaucha (Auburn, Calif.) finished well for UMass in the 200-yard individual medley. Zaucha placed second at 1:56.45 and Houck finished in third at 1:56.51.
For the women, sophomore Colleen Wasson (Harleysville, Pa.) placed third in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:12.10, and junior Lauren Rowell (Hamburg, N.Y.) finished fourth at 2:13.84. Senior Lizzy Boyle (Darien, Conn.) finished in third place in the 50-yard freestyle at 25.27.
Both teams also performed well in the relay events on Friday. The women's team took second place in the 200-yard free relay (1:40.55) and both second and third in the 400-yard medley relay (4:00.15; 4:02.92). The Minutemen took second place in both the 200-yard free relay and the 400-yard medley relay.
Both the men's and women's teams will continue to compete at the Nutmeg Invitational over the weekend, with the competition concluding on Dec. 8.
