Cross Country Teams Race At NCAAs

BRONX, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts men's and women's cross country teams ended their 2002 seasons by finishing 23rd and 27th, respectively, at the NCAA Northeast Regional meet today in Van Cortlandt Park.

Iona won the men's race with 59 points, while Providence finished second (61) and Dartmouth placed third (95). The top two teams earn automatic berths in the NCAA Championships later this month in Terre Haute, Ind. The Minutemen tallied 580 points to finish 23rd out of 33 teams.

Leading the way for the UMass men was senior Dave Hantman (Cambridge, Mass.), who finished 99th in a time of 33:27.2. Junior John Jacobson (Taunton, Mass.) placed 106th in 33:39.9, while sophomore Andrew McCarron (Lunenburg, Mass.) was 111th in 33:43.9 and senior Colin Baughman (Sherrill, N.Y.) was 123rd in 34:03.4.

Columbia won the women's team title with 70 points, followed by Providence (75) and Boston College (100). The UMass women tallied 731 points to finish 27th in the 36-team race.

Senior Julie McGee (Needham, Mass.) led the Minutewomen by finishing 134th overall in 24:01.1, while junior Kate Markopoulos (Porters Corners, N.Y.) was 143rd in 24:08.8, junior Katie Knowles (Ludlow, Mass.) was 153rd in 24:15.7 and junior Tricia Silva (Amesbury, Mass.) finished 155th with a time of 24:19.9.
