Amherst, Mass. - The Minutewomen put together the best 70 minutes of field hockey head coach Patty Shea has seen them play all season, but in the end it wasn't enough to top the Wildcats. New Hampshire defeated UMass, 2-1, on Wednesday night at Richard F. Garber Field, dropping UMass to 0-14 on the season.
"This was the best two halves of hockey we've played all season," Shea said. "We played hard for the entire 70 minutes, and we played well together."
The Wildcats got on the board first when Jen Stamp scored 3:50 into the game. Stamp's goal was set up by a penalty corner in which she gave the ball to Marcie Boyer, who then passed it back to Stamp for the early score. The goal was Stamp's 11th of the season.
UNH took the early lead, but UMass came back quickly to tie the score at 1-1. At the 10:20 mark sophomore Ashley Gilbert (Turner, Maine) scored an unassisted goal on the Wildcats' goalkeeper, Christine Buckley. Gilbert's goal was her first of the season.
The game remained even at 1-1 for almost 15 minutes until Katie White scored the final goal of the game, lifting New Hampshire over UMass, 2-1.
UMass will return to Atlantic 10 action on Saturday when they host La Salle at 12:00 p.m., and will then close out their home season on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. against West Chester.
