AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - St. Joseph's held Massachusetts to 28 percent shooting and its lowest point total in more than 15 years Saturday to cruise to a 63-38 victory.
Bill Phillips and Marvin O'Connor led the Hawks (7-4, 1-0 Atlantic 10) with 13 points each. Jameer Nelson had 12 and Na'im Crenshaw 11.
Shannon Crooks led UMass (6-5, 0-1) with 10 points.
Both teams struggled on offense at the start and the game was scoreless for the first 4:15 until O'Connor scored on a layup to start a 10-0 run for the Hawks. They never trailed.
UMass went the first 8:28 of the game without scoring until Eric Williams hit a 3-pointer. That was the only basket for UMass in the first 10 minutes.
St. Joseph's led by as many as 16 (29-13) in the first half, but UMass got baskets by Crooks and Raheim Lamb to pull within 12 at halftime, 29-17.
The Minutemen, who have lost five of their last seven games after a 4-0 start, were 6-for-28 from the field and were out rebounded 29-17 in the first half. UMass shot 15-for-54 for the game.
The Hawks, who snapped a three-game losing streak, shot 43 percent from the field in the game and held a 42-30 rebound advantage.
