The University of Connecticut scored the final two goals of the game en route to a 3-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts in field hockey action this afternoon.
UConn opened the scoring with a goal from Lauren Christie at the 31:20 mark of the first half. UMass responded with a goal from junior Erika Whiston (Athol, Mass.) less than a minute later. Freshman Ashley Gilbert (Turner, Maine) assisted on the goal.
UConn regained the lead with 15:48 remaining in the first half when it converted on a penalty corner. Christie netted the goal with assists from Amy Marland and Lauren Henderson. The Huskies added to their one-goal lead in the second half when Kelly Stolle scored at the 27:21 mark. Henderson assisted on the goal.
Sophomore Ashley Egland (Ilion, N.Y.) made a career-high 10 saves in the cage for the Minutewomen, while UConn goaltender Maureen Butler stopped seven shots. The victory improves UConn to 4-4 on the season, while the loss drops UMass to 2-5.
The Minutewomen return to action Wednesday, Oct. 3, when they face New England rival Boston University.
