WALTHAM, Mass. -
Senior Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) scored 48 seconds into the first overtime on a penalty stroke to lift the University of Massachusetts to a 2-1 victory over Boston University in field hockey action tonight on the campus of Bentley College.
UMass jumped out to a 1-0 first half lead when junior Erika Whiston (Athol, Mass.) scored off a feed from sophomore Beth Percival (Farmington, Conn.). The goal was the fourth of the season for Whiston, while the assist marked the first career point for Percival.
The Minutewomen held onto the one-goal lead until Boston University struck with 2:08 remaining in regulation. Felicia Cappabianca scored off a broken penalty corner situation. Lauren Vendetti assisted on the goal.
Bruemmer was awarded the penalty stroke in overtime after freshman Ashley Gilbert (Turner, Maine) was fouled. Gilbert had broken in free and beat the Terrier goaltender before being fouled.
The victory improves UMass to 3-5 overall on the season, while the loss drops Boston University to 3-5. UMass sophomore goaltender Ashley Egland (Ilion, N.Y.) made four saves in the cage, while Susan Harrington made 10 saves for the Terriers.
