Hockey Falls to No. 2 Boston College, 6-3

AMHERST, Mass. -- Brian Gionta scored his 26th and 27th goals of the season tonight as the Boston College Eagles defeated the University of Massachusetts, 6-3, in Hockey East action at the Mullins Center.
BC took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Gionta and Chuck Kobasew two minutes apart from each other. They outshot the Miuntemen 15-5 in the period. UMass cut the lead in half at the 11:41 mark of the second period when senior R.J. Gates (Plainville, Conn.) netted his third goal of the year. Sophomore Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) and senior Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) assisted on the play.
The Eagles quickly regained their two-goal advantage when Bobby Allen beat UMass senior netminder Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) less than a minute after Gates struck. Less than a minute later, freshman Scott Horvath (West Redding, Conn.) beat Eagle goalie Scott Clemmensen to pull the Minutemen back within a goal. Juniors Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ontario) and Darcy King (Barrie, Ontario) asssisted on Horvath's sixth of the year. Marty Hughes gave the Eagles their two-goal lead back again when he scored his fifth of the year at the 15:38 mark.
In the third, Tim Turner recorded his team-leading 16th goal of the season to cut the BC lead to 4-3. Jeff Turner won a faceoff over to Gates who passed it to Tim Turner in the slot. The Eagles put the game away when Ben Eaves scored with 3:39 remaining in the third. Gionta added his second of the game 31 seconds later to give BC the 6-3 victory.
The win improves BC to 24-8-2 overall and 15-5-2 in Hockey East, while the loss drops the Minutemen to 7-21-4 overall and 6-14-2 in Hockey East.
The Minutemen return to action Friday, March 2, when they travel to the Whittemore Center to take on New Hampshire at . Game time is 8:00 p.m.
