AMHERST, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts women's tennis head coach Judy Dixon announced this afternoon that she has withdrawn the Minutewomen from the ECAC Invitational, Oct. 12-14.

"With all of our injuries right now, I just didn't want to put the team through the pressure of playing in this tournament," said Dixon. The ECAC Invitational is a prestigious tournament that features the top 16 teams in the Northeast.

UMass will be off until Oct. 20, when it hosts St. John's in its final dual match of the fall season. Doubles play will begin at 12:00 p.m.

Senior Lindsey Gillooly (Stoughton, Mass.), whom Dixon feared may be out for the year due to a knee injury, had successful surgery and should be ready to resume play this spring. Gillooly, who transferred from Providence College after the 1999-00 season, recorded a 17-9 singles and 19-9 doubles record last year in her first season at UMass.

The UMass tennis program will be holding a mixed doubles tournament for the public after the completion of the women's match with St John's on Oct. 20 at 12:00 p.m. The event costs $30 to enter, with all proceeds benefiting the UMass tennis program.
