Field Hockey Falls to Syracuse, 2-1

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Joanne Lombard scored both Syracuse goals, including the game-winner on a penalty corner with no time remaining in regulation, as the Orangewomen defeated the University of Massachusetts, 2-1, in field hockey action this afternoon.
UMass jumped out to a 1-0 first half lead when junior Stacey Blue (Bellingham, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal with 5:55 remaining in the first half. It was the second goal of the season for Blue.
Syracuse tied the game, 1-1, when Lombard scored her first of the game on a penalty corner with 12:38 remaining in the second half. Ann-Marie Guglieri and Michelle Aronowicz assisted on the goal. Lombard's game-winnning goal was also assisted by Guglieri and Aronowicz.
The victory improves Syracuse to 8-2 overall on the season, while the loss drops Massachusetts to 3-6. UMass sophomore goaltender Ashley Egland (Ilion, N.Y.) made eight saves in the cage, and Syracuse goaltender Audrey Latsko also made eight saves.
The Minutewomen return to action Wednesday, Oct. 10, when they host New England rival Providence in a 3:30 p.m. game at Richard F. Garber Field. It will be just the second home game of the season for the Minutewomen.
