Field Hockey falls to Providence, 1-0

The University of Massachusetts field hockey team fell to Providence, 1-0, in penalty strokes this afternoon at Richard F. Garber Field. After 70 minutes of regulation and two 15 minute overtime periods, UMass and Providence remained tied, 0-0. The Minutewomen outshot the Lady Friars 24 to 16 in the game.
The Minutewomen won the coin toss and opted to defend first in the penalty strokes period in which the two teams alternate shots. First up for Providence was Jennifer Chin, who placed the ball in the back left corner of the box. Senior Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) stepped up and matched Chin's stroke with a similar goal. Courney Dow went second for Providence netting a goal in the lower left corner.
UMass senior Jill Fantasia (Watertown, Mass.) approached the ball with a chance to tie, but missed wide. Providence's Kara Luken' shot was saved by UMass sophomore goaltender Ashley Egland (Illion, N.Y.), putting the Minutewomen back in contention. Freshman Ashley Gilbert (Turner, Maine) scored next for UMass, tying the penalty stroke period at two a peice. Lady Friar Stefanie Suehnholz scored what proved to be the winning goal in the fourth round of strokes and a goal by senior Katie Willet sealed the victory.
Providence goaltender Meaghan Moran had 11 saves in the win, while UMass goaltender Ashley Egland had six saves. The victory improves Providence to 8-4 on the season, while the loss drops UMass to 3-7.
The Minutewomen return to action Saturday, Oct. 13, when they take on La Salle at 10:00 a.m. in Philadelphia, Pa. The contest marks the first Atlantic 10 confernce game for the Minutewomen this season.
