Field Hockey Falls to Dartmouth, 2-1, in Overtime

AMHERST, Mass. - Carolyn Steele scored on a penalty corner in the first overtime to lift Dartmouth College to a 2-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts in field hockey action this afternoon.

Massachusetts opened the scoring at the 11:12 mark of the first half when senior Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) deflected in a pass from junior Sarah Bohonowicz (South Deerfield, Mass.). It was Abbott's second goal of the season.

The one-goal lead held up until Dartmouth scored the equalizer with 8:41 remaining in regulation. Lauren Welsh deflected home a shot from Rebekka Stucker to send the game into overtime.

Massachusetts opened the overtime period with a solid scoring chance, but could not convert on a penalty corner. Dartmouth then took control of the overtime, taking nine shots on the UMass net. Steele netted the game-winner on a penatly corner at the 7:42 mark. Caitlin Barrett and Averill Doering assisted on the goal.

The victory improves Dartmouth to 10-4 overall, while the loss drops Massachusetts to 8-8 overall. UMass sophomore goaltender Ashley Egland (Ilion, N.Y.) made six saves in the cage, while Dartmouth goaltender Kristen Anderson made four saves.

The Minutewomen return to action Saturday, Oct. 27, when they travel to Virginia to take on Atlantic 10 foe Richmond. UMass is 5-0 in A-10 league play and has already secured the regular season title.
