Field Hockey Defeats Richmond, 2-0, in Overtime

RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Kaitlyn Byron (Greenfield, Mass.) scored with 11:39 remaining in the first overtime period to lift the University of Massachusetts to a 2-1 victory over Richmond in Atlantic 10 field hockey action this afternoon.
Massachusetts opened the scoring at the 29:24 mark of the first half when senior Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) scored off a pass from junior Sarah Bohonowicz (South Deerfield, Mass.). It was Abbott's third goal of the season and second in as many games.
The one-goal lead held up until Richmond scored the equalizer with 12:22 remaining in regulation on a penalty corner. Heather Rice netted the goal with assists from Holly Chase and Jill Murphy.
Massachusetts earned the victory when Byron scored an unassisted goal less than four minutes into overtime. It was the first game-winning goal of Byron's career. UMass sophomore goaltender Ashley Egland (Ilion, N.Y.) made 12 saves in the cage, while Richmond goaltender Jen Alpert made six saves.
The victory improves Massachusetts to 9-8 overall and 6-0 in the A-10, while the loss drops Richmond to 8-9 overall and 1-4 in the A-10. The Minutewomen have secured the top seed in the 2001 A-10 Championships which begin on Saturday, Nov. 3, in Philadelphia. UMass has captured the past five A-10 titles.
The Minutewomen finish the regular season with a non-conference game at Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, Oct. 28, at noon.
