Field Hockey Defeats La Salle, 2-1

Freshmen Ashley Gilbert (Turner, Maine) and Heather Kenney (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) scored second half goals to lift the University of Massachusetts to a 2-1 victory over La Salle in Atlantic 10 field hockey action this afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field.
With the Minutewomen trailing the Explorers 1-0 in the second half, Kenney scored on a penalty corner with an assist from senior Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany). The goal, Kenney's second of the season, was scored with 23:27 remaining in the game. Gilbert netted the game-winner with an unassisted goal at the 9:50 mark.
The Explorers got on the scoreboard first when Laura Whitman scored with 16:29 remaining in the opening half.
The victory improves Massachusetts to 4-7 overall on the season and 1-0 in the A-10, while the loss drops La Salle 2-10 overall and 0-1 in the A-10. UMass sophomore goaltender Ashley Egland (Ilion, N.Y.) made six saves in the cage, while La Salle goaltender Colleen Bolger also made six saves.
The Minutewomen return to action Wednesday, Oct. 10, when they host New England rival Providence in a 3:30 p.m. game at Richard F. Garber Field. It will be just the second home game of the season for the Minutewomen.
