Hockey Falls to Providence, 4-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Drew Omicioli scored two goals and assisted on another as Providence College defeated the University of Massachusetts, 4-0, in college hockey action Saturday night at the Schneider Arena.

The Friars scored two first period goals, the first coming from Omicioli with assists from Peter Fregoe and sophomore Devin Rask at 14:13. The Friars second goal came on the power play by sophomore Michael Lucci with assists from Fregoe and senior Matt Libby at 17:42.

Providence added two goals in the second period. Fregoe scored his fifth of the year at 4:05 with assists from Omicioli and Rask. Omicioli scored his second of the game and fourth of the year at 19:13 with assist an from Rask.

Rask ended the game with three assists while Fregoe had one goal and two assists.

Senior goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) made 11 saves in two periods of play before being replaced by junior Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) after the second period. Johnson made 16 saves while Nolan Shaefer made 23 saves for the Friars.

With the loss, UMass falls to 5-12-2 overall and to 4-5-0 in Hockey East, while the Friars improve to 10-5-3 overall and 6-3-1 in Hockey East with the win.

The Minutemen return to action Sunday, Jan. 7, at home when they host the Friars. Game time is 5:00 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
