Hockey Falls to UMass Lowell, 3-2

AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Minutemen fell to the River Hawks of UMass Lowell tonight, 3-2, in Hockey East action at the Mullins Center.
The River Hawks got on the board first when Kyle Kidney tallied his sixth goal of the year less than six minutes into the game. Laurent Meunier, who played a part in all three goals, scored three minutes later giving UMass Lowell a 2-0 advantage.
At 11:46 of the first period, sophomore Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) scored his 13th goal of the season on the power play to cut the lead in half. Sophomore Jimmy Callahan (Lexington, Mass.) and senior captain Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) assisted on the goal.
The only goal of the second period came while the teams were skating four-on-four as Jeff Turner netted his fifth goal of the year by converting a breakaway to tie the game at 7:28. Tim Turner picked up an assist on the play.
In the third period, Yorick Treille gave the River Hawks the lead for good with a power play goal at the 5:40 mark. Senior netminder Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) made 14 saves in the loss for the Minutemen, while Jimi St. John turned aside 22 UMass shots.
The loss drops the Minutemen to 7-16-2 on the season, and 6-9-0 in Hockey East, while UMass Lowell improves to 12-10-2 overall, and 4-7-2 in Hockey East.
The Minutemen return to action Saturday, January 27 when they host the Huskies of Northeastern at the Mullins Center. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
