Hockey Defeats Merrimack, 2-1

North Andover, Mass. -- Freshman forward Scott Horvath (West Redding, Conn.) scored the game winning goal early in the third period as the University of Massachusetts held on to defeat Merrimack College, 2-1, in Hockey East action at the Volpe Complex.
The Minutemen jumped onto the board first when freshman Mike Warner (Waltham, Mass.) scored at 3:24 of the first period with assists from junior Randy Drohan (Mississauga, Ontario) and freshman Thomas P?ck (Klagenfurt, Austria). The assist was Drohan's first of the season.
The Warriors tied the game early in the second period when John Pyliotis scored with assists from Joey Gray and Ron Mongeau at 4:46.
Horvath put the Minutemen ahead for good at 1:37 of the third period when he tipped in a shot from the point just 20 seconds into their third power play of the night. P?ck and junior forward Darcy King (Barrie, Ontario) assisted on the goal. P?ck finished with two assists in the game to increase his season point total to 12.
Senior goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) made 32 saves in the net for the Minutemen, while Joe Exter stopped 34 shots for the Warriors.
With the win, the Minutemen improve to 7-15-2 overall and 6-8-0 in Hockey East, while Merrimack falls to 12-13-2 overall and 5-9-1 in Hockey East. The victory vaults the Minutemen into a tie with Boston University for fifth place in Hockey East.
The Minutemen return to action Thursday, Jan. 25, when they host UMass Lowell and Saturday, Jan. 27, against Northeastern. Both games will be at 7:00 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
