AMHERST, Mass. -- Merrimack College freshman Marco Rosa scored two goals as Merrimack College defeated the University of Massachusetts, 3-0, tonight in Hockey East action at the Mullins Center.
The Warriors got off to a quick start as Rosa scored his first of the night just one minute into the game. The Minutemen put 12 shots on Merrimack goalie, Tom Welby in the period, but he turned each of them aside.
Senior goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) made 22 saves for the Minutemen including four in a row during a furious Merrimack power play during the second period. However with one second remaining on the man advantage, Rosa slipped a rebound past Helanen to put the Warriors up 2-0. It was Rosa's fifth goal of the year and second on the night.
The Minutemen put 12 more shots on Welby during the third period but were unable to beat him. On the night, Welby turned aside 33 UMass shots. Late in the period, Nick Parillo scored an empty net goal to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.
