KINGSTON, R.I. -- The University of Massachusetts men's swimming & diving team finished first out of four teams at the Rhode Island Invitational this weekend. UMass won three out of the four relay events and senior Chris Arsenault (Peabody, Mass.) won two events as the team earned 377 points to place ahead of Dartmouth (263), La Salle (223) and event host Rhode Island (219).
The 400 medley relay team of sophomore Justin Houck (Wyomissing, Pa.), senior Mike Sabina (Avon, Mass.), Arsenault and sophomore Chad Arnold (Mohnton, Pa.) won the event with a time of 3:31.69, while the 200 free relay team of Sabina, sophomore Ryan Zaucha (Auburn, Calif.), Arnold and Arsenault placed first with a time of 1:26.99. The 200 medley relay team of Zaucha, Sabina, senior Joe Martin (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Arsenault gave UMass its third relay win with a time of 1:37.70.
Arsenault won the 200 IM (1:55.57) and the 100 free (46.75), while Sabina won the 100 breast (1:01.04). UMass' other individual winners included Houck in the 100 back (54.70), Zaucha in the 200 back (1:59.16) and freshman Peter Tawczynski (Holden, Mass.) in the 200 breast (2:13.29).
The Minutemen are 5-2 in dual-meet competition and return to the pool on Jan. 20, when they travel to Baltimore to take on the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and George Washington, at 1:00 p.m.
