AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's gymnastics opened its season with a 205.00-202.150 victory over defending national champion Penn State tonight at Boyden Gymnasium. The win moves UMass to 1-0, while Penn State falls to 0-1.

The Minutemen took the first five places on the pommel horse, led by sophomore Justin Hammar's (St. Paul. Minn.) 9.25. Classmate Brian Peterson (Albuquerque, N.M.) took second (9.10), followed by senior Andy Leis (Suffield, Conn.) in third with a score of 9.00. Leis also took second on the parallel bars (8.55) and the horizontal bar (8.65).

Freshman Patrick McFarlin (Longmeadow, Mass.) placed second on the floor exercise (8.700) and third on the parallel bars (8.50) for UMass, while Bryan McNulty (Springfield, Va.) took second on the vault with a 9.00.

Penn State's Jose Palacios placed first in the all-around with a 50.40, followed by Tobias Ekman (49.850). Palacios also won the parallel bars with a score of 8.85.

UMass returns to action next weekend, Jan. 19-20, when it will participate in the West Point Open. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
