AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts hockey team defeated Northeastern University, 2-0, in Hockey East action at the Mullins Center on Saturday night.
The Minutemen jumped on the board late in the second period with Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) scoring his first goal of the season at 15:36 with assists from sophomore Kelly Sickavish (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and junior Darcy King (Barrie, Ontario).
Senior goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) made 16 saves in the net for the Minutemen. It was Helanen's third shutout of the year and the fifth of his career. Northeastern goaltender Mike Gilhooly also made 16 saves.
Senior Kris Wallis (Agassiz, British Columbia) scored an empty net goal with one second left in the third period with assists from Jalkanen and sophomore Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.). The goal was Wallis' fifth point in the last three games.
With the victory, the Minutemen improve to 6-14-2 overall and 5-7-0 in Hockey East, while Northeastern falls to 8-9-3 overall and 3-6-3 in Hockey East. UMass is now 4-3-2 in the nine games played at the Mullins Center this season.
The Minutemen return to action Friday, Jan. 19, and Saturday, Jan. 20, as they play a home-and-home with Merrimack. UMass will host the Warriors on Friday at the Mullins Center before traveling to North Andover, Mass., for Saturday's game. Game time for both games is 7:00 p.m.
