Cross Country Opens Season, Finishing Second and Third

DURHAM, N.H. -- The UMass men's cross country team tied for second and the women's team placed third at College Woods cross country course in New Hampshire.

Leading the way for the Minutemen were senior Mike Pieck (Guilderland, N.Y.) and senior Kevin Somers (Monson, Mass.). Pieck finished fourth overall, clocking a 25:14 for the 8,000M course. Somers was right behind, placing fifth with a time of 25:27. The next two UMass finishers were Ryan Corbett (Highland, N.Y.) and Salvatore Nastasi (Merrich, N.Y.), who placed 16th and 17th respectively at 26:29 and 26:30. Brendan Sullivan (New City, N.Y.) came in 24th overall at 26:56.

New Hampshire (27 points) won the men's race, and was followed by UMass (71), UConn (71), Boston College (80) and Brown (NS).

For the Minutewomen, junior Kristin Cisowksi (Salem, N.H.) led the way by finishing 13th overall with a time of 19:23 for the 5,000M course. Freshman Molly Ketschek and senior Melissa Henderson (Abington, Mass.) followed at 17th and 18th, logging times of 19:43 and 19:48. Katherine Blais (Andover, Mass.) took 24th at 19:59, and Rebecca Aldrich (Winchester, Mass.) was next at 25th place with 20:08.

Boston College swept the first nine places en route to winning the women's race, and were followed by Brown (74), UMass (84), UNH (94) and UConn (98).

The men's and women's cross country teams return to action on Saturday, Sept. 16th, hosting Boston University, Maine, Central Connecticut and Vermont.
