Junior Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) scored with 8:41 remaining in the game to lead the ninth ranked University of Massachusetts field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the seventh ranked University of Connecticut this afternoon at Garber Field.
Bruemmer converted on UMass' third penalty corner of the game to put the Minutewomen ahead. Senior tri-captain Lucy Koch (Ipswich, Mass.) and senior Patty Robinson (Norwood, Mass.) both assisted on the game-winning goal.
UMass opened the scoring when junior Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) controlled a loose ball in front of the UConn net and fired a shot past goalkeeper Alana Linick with 4:41 remaining in the first half. It was Abbott's fourth goal of the season.
UConn tied the game, 1-1, going into the half when Laura Klein scored off a rebound on a penalty corner with no time left on the clock. UMass senior goaltender Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) made 11 saves, while Linick made 11 saves for the Huskies.
The victory improves UMass to 8-2 on the year, while UConn falls to 9-3. The win marked the Minutewomen's first victory over UConn since a 3-1 win in 1993. UMass had lost seven consecutive times to the Huskies, including two losses last season.
The Minutewomen return to action Wednesday, Oct. 4, when they host Boston University at Garber Field. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
