UMass Field Hockey Defeats Boston University in Shootout, 2-1

amherst, mass. -- The No. 7 ranked University of Massachusetts field hockey team defeated No. 14 Boston University 2-1 Wednesday night at Garber Field. The Minutewomen defeated BU in the second series of penalty strokes after two scoreless overtimes. UMass scored three goals in the shootout to the Terriers two. The Minutewomen improved to 9-2 on the year, while BU fell to 7-4.
Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) scored the opening goal of the game for UMass at 11:48 into the first half. Boston's Rachael Stillings tied the game off a penalty corner in the second half with just 9:12 left.
After two scoreless overtimes, Kristen Schmidt (Greenfield, Mass.) scored on UMass' fifth shot to force a second series of penalty shots. Schmidt scored another goal on the second shot in the second series to give UMass the win.
Senior Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) made seven saves during play and eight during the shootout. Susan Harrington made seven saves for the Terriers.
The Minutewomen return to action Saturday, Oct. 7, at 1:00 p.m., as they host Syracuse University at Garber Field.
