AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team downed area-rival Amherst College today, 6-3, to jump to 1-0 this season in dual-match play. The contest was a completion of the match on Sept. 19, which was suspended early due to the weather conditions.
UMass captured five out of six singles matches in the win, while dropping two out of three doubles points. Freshman Francesca Mancini (Milan, Italy), who was recently named the UMass/WHMP Athlete of the Week for her 4-0 outing last weekend at the Eastern Tennis Championships, came out victorious at No. 1 singles with a straight-set decision (6-2, 6-0) over Jamie Cohen.
Other singles victories came from freshman Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) at No. 3, junior Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) at No. 4, freshman Susan Hyams (Cincinnati, Ohio) at No. 5 and junior Lindsey Gillooly (Stoughton, Mass.) at No. 6.
The tandem of Mancini and Depontes also won at No. 2 doubles.
