Amherst, Mass. -- All-American Anke Bruemmer (Koeln, Germany) scored twice as the Minutewomen (2-0) continue to start the season off strong with a impressive 3-1 win over New Hampshire (1-2).
UMass took advantage of a early penalty-corner at the 7:41 mark as Bruemmer scored with assists from Lucy Koch (Ipswich, Mass.) and Patty Robinson (Norwood, Mass.). New Hampshire came back with a goal by Cameron Schmitz at 17:40 to tie it up at 1-1. With just 4:16 left in the first half, a determined Kristen Schmidt (Greenfield, Mass.) scored off of a rebound by her own shot to give the Minutewomen a 2-1 led at the half.
The second half was controlled by the Minutewomen's defense as they allowed only one shot by the Wildcats. Bruemmer's second goal, at 58:32, was much like the first as it was a penalty-corner assisted again by Koch and Robinson. That would be all the Minutewomen would need as the defense controlled the game as saw the offense outshot the Wildcats 19-4.
Senior goaltender Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) gave a strong effort in net making three saves on the afternoon.
The Minutewomen return to action at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 3, at Garber Field as they host Northeastern.
