AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team recently announced the hiring of Jens Gerlach as assistant coach.
Gerlach comes to UMass from Barry University, where he served as assistant women's tennis coach from 1999-2000 and as assistant men's coach from 1998-99. Before Barry, he also occupied the assistant women's tennis coaching position at his alma mater, the University of West Florida, from 1997-98.
Gerlach graduated from West Florida in 1997 with a B.S. in Business Administration. He went on to earn a M.S. in Sport Management and a M.B.A. in Business Administration from Barry University in 1999.
Gerlach was a stellar tennis player at West Florida, garnering ITA All-America status and ITA Scholar-Athlete All-America acclaim. He was also named the West Florida Male Athlete of the Year in 1997.
Gerlach continued playing tennis competitively after graduation, and recently won the Western New England Tennis singles title at the Berkshire West Athletic Club in Pittsfield, Mass.
"I believe this team is very fortunate to have someone of Jens' caliber here," UMass head coach Judy Dixon said. "It is a wonderful opportunity for our team to be able to take advantage of his knowledge and expertise. I expect his intensity and desire for the game will rub off on our players."
