Women's Tennis Sweeps Fairfield, 6-0

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team picked up a much-needed win today, sweeping Fairfield 6-0 and snapping a four-match losing skid, to improve to 5-13 overall this season and 2-8 during the spring campaign.
Today's match marked the final home outings for seniors Ola Gerasimova (Liatvia Ridge, Russia) and Michelle Kuhr (Longmeadow, Mass.). Gerasimova overcame tendonitis in her right arm to defeat Lenka Hurton in straight sets in the No. 1 singles slot (6-2, 6-4). Kuhr, who jumped up a position today to No. 5 singles, downed Alyssa Haddad, 6-0, 6-1.
In other singles action, sophomore Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) defeated Kelly DiMario in the No. 2 slot (6-1, 6-1), while sophomore Annie Hamilton (Plano, Texas) picked up her third consecutive win at No. 3 over Elizabeth Steege (6-0, 6-4). Junior Robyn Lebovitz (Marietta, Ga.) defeated Kristy Golden in the No. 4 slot, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Katie Stammen (North Attleboro, Mass.) won her match at No. 6 singles by default.
"I think this was a very emotional match," head coach Judy Dixon said. "And I think Helena Horak said it best, `it's so nice to come out and win big like this.' We have a lot of people who are injured or sick, but they came out and played for our seniors. I didn't have to do any coaching today. They just came out and played hard. And it was nice to have the support from our men's team, too."
The Minutewomen are next in action on April 10 against Fordham in Bronx, N.Y. The men's tennis squad will play host to the Rams tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Upper Boyden Tennis Courts.
