ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIPS: UMass went 2-1 at the 2000 Bell Atlantic Atlantic 10 Championships last weekend to capture third place for the second consecutive year. The Minutewomen posted a 5-3 victory over Xavier in their first round of competition, but went on to fall 5-1 to eventual champion Virginia Tech. In consolation action, UMass defeated George Washington, 5-3, to take third place at the championship. The Minutewomen's season is now complete. UMass finishes with a 9-15 overall record, which includes a 6-10 mark during the spring campaign.
GERASIMOVA AND HAMILTON NAMED TO ALL-CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM: Senior Ola Gerasimova (Liatvia Ridge, Russia) and sophomore Annie Hamilton (Plano, Texas) garnered Atlantic 10 All-Championship honors, marking the third straight year for Gerasimova and the first citation for Hamilton. Gerasimova played in the No. 1 singles and doubles slot all year, while Hamilton competed at No. 3 singles and at No. 1 doubles with Gerasimova.
GEORGE WASHINGTON RECAP: The Minutewomen won four out of five singles matches in the victory over the Colonials. Sophomore Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) downed Ghada Skaff at No. 2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, while Hamilton posted a 6-1, 7-6(3) victory over Sarine Weingarten in the No. 3 slot. At No. 4, freshman Katie Stammen (North Attleboro, Mass.) defeated Susie Coggin in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, and junior Robyn Lebovitz (Marietta, Ga.) downed Katarina Stastny at No. 5, 106, 6-3, 6-2. Gerasimova fell 6-2, 6-4 to Tracey Wei in the No. 1 slot. In doubles action, the No. 1 tandem of Gerasimova and Hamilton posted a 9-7(1) victory over Wei and Weingarten.
HEAD COACH JUDY DIXON: Judy Dixon (Southern California `73), the 1999 USTA/New England Coach-of-the-Year, is in her eighth season with the Minutewomen. She currently stands at 88-60 while at UMass. Before coming to UMass, Dixon spent three seasons at Yale, where she was 40-14 overall.
