Track and Field Starts Indoor Season off Strong

Boston, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts men's and women's track and field teams started the indoor season off with a second and third place finish Saturday afternoon at Boston University.
The men's team was lead by senior Marc Sylvander (Chicopee, Mass.) as they finished in third place with 82 points behind New Hampshire, 97, and Boston University, 90. Sylvander won the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.49, with teammates Hugh Reid (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finishing fourth at 50.76 and Mike Howell finishing sixth at 51.97.
The Minutemen went one and two in the shot put with Jeff Jason edging Eric Uliano (Haverhill, Mass.) with a toss of 48'1.25" to Uliano's 48'.0.50"
Anthony Ortega won the long jump with a jump of 21'11.75".
The women's team finished second with 123 points behind Central Connecticut State, 145.
Carole LaPlante (Gardiner, Maine) won the shot put with toss of 38'7.50". Megan McCormick (State College, Pa) finished second in the mile run with a time of 5:00.91, while Katherine Blais (Andover, Mass.) finished fifth at 5:25.65.
The women return to action next weekend, Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Rhode Island Pentathlon.
