Men's Gymnastics Wins UMass Open

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's gymnastics team finished first at the 10th annual UMass Men's Gymnastics Open late Saturday night at Curry Hicks Cage. The Minutemen, who finished with 202.9 points, finished atop Temple (197.45), Army (192.3), Springfield College (187.15), Vermont (162.8), MIT (149.25) and Southern Connecticut State (126.7).
UMass' Andy Leis (Suffield, Conn.) won the all-around (50.00), finishing third on the pommel horse (8.45) and parallel bars (8.05). Teammate Darren Morace (Westfield, Mass.) (49.7) finished a close second to Leis in the all-around followed by Joshua Chassee (47.55) of Springfield College.
Minuteman Matt Plumser (East Brunswick, N.J.) placed first on the pommel horse (8.6) followed by teammates Justin Hammar (Woodbury, Minn.) (8.5), Leis (8.45), and Patrick McFarlin (Longmeadow, Mass.) (8.4). In the floor exercise, Eric Bacon (Belchertown, Mass.) (8.8) finished second to Army's John Robella (9.0).
Temple's Alex Weber (8.85) finished first on the horizontal bars followed by Morace (8.6) and Weber's teammate Richard Maguire (8.55). On the parallel bars, Temple's Travis Kitchen (8.35) placed first followed by UMass' Ben Jacobs (Milwaukee, Wis.), Leis (8.05) and Plumser (8.05).
UMass is off until after the new year when it hosts Penn State on January 13 in Boyden Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
