UMass Tennis Heads to Regional Championship

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts' tennis teams have completed their fall regular season schedules and will compete in their respective regional championships this weekend to close out the fall season.
Both teams end their dual matches with 6-1 records. The men were undefeated until losing last weekend to regional power Connecticut in their final dual match, while the women won their last five matches after losing to Boston University on Sept. 27.
The men travel to Blacksburg, Va. on the forehand of freshman Brent Davis (San Diego, Calif.). Davis is undefeated in dual match play at 7-0, while his overall record stands at 12-1. Junior Steve Prisco (Dedham, Mass.) won his first five matches of the season, but has lost two in a row to the No. 1 players of UConn and St. John's, two of the region's top players. Prisco and Davis teamed up at No. 1 doubles and earned a 13-2 overall record including a trip to the Flight A doubles final at the UConn Invitational earlier this month.
The Minutewomen opened a lot of eyes this season by beating regional powers Dartmouth and Columbia. They have been led by the solid play of freshman Francesca Mancini (Milan, Italy). She is 11-0 overall, including her win at the Eastern Tennis Championships on Sept. 17, in her first ever collegiate tournament. That achievement earned her the WHMP/UMass Athlete of the Week honors. Mancini and her doubles partner Jafra Depontes (Kaliua-Kona, Hawaii) are undefeated.
On Thursday, Nov. 2, the Minutemen will invade the Virginia Tech campus for a five-day tournament, while the women travel to William and Mary University Saturday, Nov. 4, for four-day tournament. This will be the last action both teams will see until February.
