PHILADELPHIA -- Junior Kaitlyn Byron (Greenfield, Mass.) and senior tri-captain Kristen Schmidt (Greenfield, Mass.) each scored goals to lead the ninth-ranked University of Massachusetts field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Atlantic 10 rival Temple earlier today on Geasey Field.
Following a scoreless first half, Schmidt put UMass on the scoreboard when she netted a goal at the 25:23 mark of the second half. Schmidt knocked home a crossing pass from junior Lindsay Abbott (Northampton, Mass.) to give the Minutewomen a 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later, Byron controlled a loose ball at the top of the scoring circle and cut toward the net. She fired a low shot to the right side that beat Temple goaltender Serene McGrath. The goal gave the Minutewomen a 2-0 lead.
Temple got on the scoreboard when Juliann Leskiw scored at 11:04. The goal was assisted by Haley Dervinis.
Senior goaltender Zowie Tucker (Neath, South Wales) made nine saves in the cage for the Minute-women, while McGrath made 11 for the Owls.
The victory improves UMass to 11-3 overall on the year and 1-0 in the A-10, while Temple falls to 5-9 and 0-1 in the A-10.
The Minutewomen return to action Saturday, Oct. 14, when they travel to league rival St. Joseph's on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 2:00 p.m.
