Women's Tennis To Open Season In Syracuse

SYRACUSE INVITATIONAL: The Minutewomen will open up the season at the SUnity Life Tennis Classic on Sept. 11-12, hosted by Syracuse. The tournament will feature approximately 75 players with six flights of singles and three flights of doubles. Some of the teams participating include Boston University, Cornell, Marshall, Providence, Rutgers, Syracuse and Temple. The Minutewomen are coming off a 16-9 season, in which the squad placed third in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Six letterwinners return in addition to three newcomers for the 1999-2000 campaign. Senior Ola Gerasimova (Liatvia Ridge, Russia) returns this year after posting a 19-14 singles mark and a 15-19 doubles record in the 1998-99 season. Also returning to the action is senior captain Robyn Lebovitz (Marietta, Ga.), who went 22-10 in singles and 12-11 in doubles in last year?s campaign.
CLOSING IN ON 100: Head coach Judy Dixon (Southern California ?73) is closing in on her 100th UMass victory. Dixon, who is in her eighth season with the Minutewomen, needs just 10 more victories to record No. 100. She currently stands at 130-61 overall and 90-47 at UMass. Before coming to UMass, Dixon spent three seasons at Yale, where she was 40-14 overall.
FRESHMEN TRIO: Dixon has added three newcomers to her roster this season, Elizabeth Ebert (Westford, Mass.), Lauren Perry (Pembroke, Mass.) and Kathryn Stammen (North Attleboro, Mass.). Ebert was a Lowell Sun All-Star as a senior at Westford Academy. Perry compiled a .650 winning percentage at Silver Lake Regional H.S. Stammen went undefeated in her senior campaign, in addition to an impressive 65-1 regular-season record.
