WHAT?S NEXT: UMass will travel down I-91 on Tuesday evening to take on the University of Hartford Hawks (1-1) at 7:00 p.m. Hartford defeated the Minutemen 1-0 a year ago at Totman Field. On Friday night, UMass will return to Szot Park in Chicopee for a 7:00 p.m., kickoff against the Maine Black Bears (5-11-1 in 1998). On Sunday, the Minutemen play their Totman Field opener against cross-state rival Boston University (1-1). Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. (following the conclusion of the women?s soccer tournament).
UMASS CLAIMS SECOND PLACE AT LEGENDS TOURNAMENT: UMass claimed second place at this weekend?s Nike/Jacksonville University Legends Soccer Tournament, hosted by #20 Jacksonville. In Sunday?s match against Georgia State, UMass surrendered two goals in the first 11 minutes of play. However, the Minutemen retained their composure. Junior Matt Christy (Paxton, Mass.) scored 30 minutes into the match off a pass from Fred Kinateder (Waukesha, Wis.) to cut Georgia State?s lead in half. Kinateder struck on an unassisted goal less than a minute later to tie the match at 2-2 heading into halftime. In the second half, it was all UMass as Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) tallied at 71:49 to break the tie. Adam Black (San Jose, Calif.) added two goals, and Jon Burr (Springfield, Mass.) notched the sixth UMass goal with about three minutes remaining to secure the 6-2 win. James Redmond (Springfield, Mass.) had three assists, including one on Deren?s game-winner. Todd Fowler (Clifton Park, N.Y.) made five saves in the win. On Friday against the host school, the Minutemen fell 3-1 as Jacksonville scored two first half goals, then added an insurance goal midway through the second half to take a 3-0 lead. Senior forward Todd Baron (Albertson, N.Y.) put the Minutemen on the scoreboard in the 85th minute on a goal scored on a penalty kick to cut the margin to 3-1. Sophomore goalkeeper Bryan O?Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.), in his first start of the season, made four saves in defeat for UMass.
THREE NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Junior Seth Lilburn (Boonton Township, N.J.), J.R. Pouncey (Houston, Texas), and John Lytton (Madison, Miss.) were named to the Legends Tournament All-Tournament team. Lilburn, who missed most of last season after breaking a bone in his foot against Rhode Island, made his first start since the injury in Sunday?s game. Pouncey has started all three games on defense for UMass thus far this season. Lytton, who was the Gatorade (high school) Player of the Year in Mississippi last spring, also made his first start of the season on Sunday afternoon.
SIX GOALS AGAINST GEORGIA STATE MOST SINCE 1992: The six goals scored on Sunday afternoon against Georgia State were the most scored by UMass since September 12, 1992, when the Minutemen trounced Temple by a 6-1 margin at Totman field.
MINUTEMEN FALL IN OPENER AT UNH: Brian Rosa?s goal at the 20:02 mark of the match was all the offense the Wildcats would need, as goalkeeper Mitch Osman made five saves in net in UNH?s 1-0 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Lewis Field in Durham. Senior goalkeeper Todd Fowler made four saves in a losing effort for the Minutemen.
OVER 1,200 TURN OUT TO SEE FRIENDLY?S CUP IN CHICOPEE: A crowd of 1,218 fans turned out at Chicopee?s Szot Park on August 28 to watch UMass take on ACC power Wake Forest in the annual Friendly?s Cup exhibition match. The event was preceded on Friday by an open practice, where fans got a chance to see their favorite players practice and meet the Minutemen. Wake Forest defeated UMass 3-1 in the exhibition contest. The Demon Deacons took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Chad Evans and Jamal Seale. UMass countered early in the second half when senior Adam Black connected on a pass from Jonathan Bibb (London, England), to cut the lead in half. Wake responded twelve minutes later with their third goal of the match, a steal by forward Ben Stafford which Stafford shot past backup keeper Bryan O?Quinn. O?Quinn and Todd Fowler, who started the game, each made three saves for UMass.
