Women's Tennis Falls To Columbia In Tight Match

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women?s tennis team fell, 4-3, to Columbia on Sept. 24 in Amherst, Mass., in the first dual match of the season for UMass. The Minutewomen fall to 0-1, while the Lions improve to 4-0 on the season.
Senior Ola Gerasimova (Liatvia Ridge, Russia) started out with an easy win in No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Joyce Chang. Freshman Katie Stammen (North Attleboro, Mass.) also picked up a win in the No. 5 singles slot with a 6-4, 6-5 decision over Leena Krishnaswamy. Sophomore Annie Hamilton (Plano, Texas) tied the match up, 3-3, with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Andrea Sanders in the No. 3 position. Sophomore Helena Horak (Westlake Village, Calif.) was forced to retire at No. 2 with a wrist injury.
The match came down to the final doubles point in the end. UMass got off to a quick start with a victory by Hamilton and Gerasimova in the No. 1 slot. The duo defeated Ilene Weintraub and Krishnaswamy, 8-3. The Minutewomen couldn?t come up with the final doubles win, though, as both the No. 2 and 3 teams lost in the final two matches of the day.
"Given what we had to deal with, we played pretty well," head coach Judy Dixon said. "Katie came out and played a tough match, and Ola got us a much needed win. Annie played beautifully and with a lot of intensity, which carried us through the match. It came down to the doubles point just like we thought it would, and having to compete without Helena made a big difference. Since we do have a small team, we need to make sure that everybody is staying healthy for us."
UMass is next in action on Sept. 29 against St. John?s at 3 p.m.
