Women Place Third At Vermont

THE WEEK AHEAD: UMass is off this week and will return to action in the Meet of Champions on Oct. 2 in Bronx, N.Y.
A LOOK BACK: The UMass women?s cross country team finished third in the Vermont cross country meet in Burlington, Vt. Boston University won the event with the top five individual times of the day. The host Vermont took second, with Central Connecticut and Albany finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Senior Sally Hirsch (Brookline, Mass.) led the way for the Minutewomen, finishing in tenth place with a time of 18:59. Sophomore Kristin Cisowski (Salem, N.H.) came in second for the Minutewomen at 15th with a time of 19:13. Senior Elizabeth Sheptyck (North Eastham, Mass.) finished third for UMass and 18th overall. Senior Monica Elmore (Coldchester, Vt.) and junior Melissa Henderson (Abington, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Minutewomen, finishing 19 and 20th respectively.
HEAD COACH JULIE LaFRENIERE: Julie Lafreniere is in her 13th season at the helm of Minutewomen cross country/track & field teams. She has led the team to six out of the last eight Atlantic 10 cross country titles, including the last four in a row. While an undergradate at UMass, LaFreniere led her team to a New England Championship and a ninth-place finish at the first women?s National Championship. The 1977 UMass graduate has been named A-10 Coach of the Year five times, in 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996 and 1997.
